UK: Planning Granted for 140 Meter High Observation Wheel & Leisure Complex in Newcastle

“Giants on the Quayside” is a large-scale project developed by the World Wheel Company Newcastle for an over 32,000-sqm site on the banks of the River Tyne in Newcastle, comprising a 140 meter-high observation wheel and a surrounding leisure landscape with an FEC, sports facilities, restaurants and other offerings. Planning for the project that is scheduled to be completed by 2023 was recently granted by the authorities, giving “green light” for the construction of Europe’s highest observation wheel (according to the developer), named “The Whey Aye”.

Commenting on the planning being granted, World Wheel Company Newcastle CEO Phil Lynagh says: “We are hugely excited to have been given the go ahead to build a development that is focused on delivering the greatest benefit for the city of Newcastle, its people and its business community. […]” Chief Operating Officer Nigel Hartley adds, “Our 100 million Pound investment in building The Whey Aye and Giants on the Quayside is just the beginning of the beneficial impact our development will have. We expect to create up to 800 jobs and will help generate many more investment and employment opportunities thanks to increased tourism and commerce within both Newcastle and the wider North East.”

Construction works are scheduled to start in early 2020. (eap)
