Stetten – Weinviertel/Lower Austria “Fossilienwelt Weinviertel” World of Fossils Opens

The largest fossil oyster reef, the world’s largest fossil pearl and a look-out tower shaped like an auger shell: this and a whole lot more can be found at the world of fossils in Stetten (a town of 1,200) which was ceremoniously opened on the 5th of June. Unique natural phenomena up to 17 million years old are now accessible to the public after more than 20 years of excavation and research work. Fossilenwelt Weinviertel was constructed with an investment of five million euros and expects to attract at least 35,000 visitors a year. Apart from many other magnet attractions, it will be presenting the world’s largest fossil oyster reef. Fossilienwelt’s landmark is a 17-metre tall look-out tower that can be seen from afar. The fundament of the natural phenomena here developed around 17 million years ago when the area surrounding today’s Korneu Castle was still covered by a tropical ocean. (eap)
