Salzburg /Austria: No water park after all?

The town of Salzburg planned a new facility in the area of Liefering (we have already reported in the print edition), instead of the traditional “Paracelsusbad” in the town centre. €50 million should have been invested in the new and attractive facility! However within a few weeks more than 5,000 signatures were gathered by fans of the old bath to keep Paracelsusbad. This was an alarm signal for the SPÖ ruling in Salzburg, who had until then played a significant role in initiating and supporting the project, and therefore also wanted to reduce the bathing tourism of citizens of Salzburg to nearby Bavarian baths like Bad Reichenhall, Berchtesgaden and Freilassing. What makes it even harder is that the SPÖ lost their majority at the district council vote in the town parliament on 1st March and therefore probably have to say goodbye to the prestigious project. Currently there are increased considerations of a general refurbishment of Paracelsusbad, which should actually be torn down… The surrounding areas, who also wanted to be financially involved in the new bath outside of the town centre, are disappointed by the climbdown of the Salzburg town superiors. However a final decision by the Salzburg town administration is still pending. (eap)
