Turkey: New Museum on the “Island of Democracy and Freedom“

In 2013, the former prison island Yassıada located in the sea of Marmara (Turkey) was renamed “Island of Democracy and Freedom“. Thematically influenced by the island’s history, the new Democracy & Freedom Museum was developed as a visitor attraction directly located at the island. Istanbul-based company Outdoor Factory was in charge of creating the exhibition’s concept design. In cooperation with the journalist Ozay Sendir, the company evaluated an amount of historic documents, letters and paintings. Overall, the Democracy & Freedom Museum, which is spread on a groundspace of 2,000 square metres, presents the history of Turkey in 13 different theme rooms.

Suphi Aydiner, Managing Partner of Outdoor Factory, comments: “We had realized designs for over 100 installations, monuments, multimedia content, exhibition areas, […] and replicas of military vehicles in the museum and have implemented a museum that will be exemplary to the world.” Additionally, Outdoor Factory realized several animatronics of important political personalities of the past.
