Austria's Swimming Pool Scene: Mixed Summer Results

Whilst reports suggest Austria's outdoor swimming pools have experienced massive downturns of up to 30 percent in visitor figures over the summer in comparison to last year, the country's numerous thermal spas have experienced rises in visitor figures, even topping ten percent in some cases. Similar tendencies have been reported in Germany, where an increasing number of open-air pools are relying on municipal subsidies to stay afloat. The thermal spas and leisure pools, which are intelligently built, generally family-friendly and offer a wide range of services, have likely played a major role in making outdoor pools seem less attractive to potential visitors in recent years. In contrast, thermal spas and outdoor pools which are not reliant on the weather—especially those with facilities for families—are on the up. (eap)
