Germany: Temporary Railway Planned to Connect Exhibit Grounds of BUGA 23

From April to October 2023, the “Bundesgartenschau 2023“ (BUGA 23 / national garden and floral exhibition) will take place in Mannheim (Rhine-Neckar region). For this large-scale event, a new railway is planned to temporarily connect the “Spinelli“ and “Luisenpark“ exhibition grounds. Austrian manufacturer Doppelmayr has been commissioned with the development and construction of the railway. In order to connect the old Spinelli military ground and the Luisenpark, a 2.1 kilometre-long monocable railway is planned, which is supposed to transport 2,800 passengers per hour. In total, there will be 65 gondolas, which will offer a capacity for ten persons each. A ride with the railway will take about eight minutes.

The planning permission is supposed to be permitted by the end of this year so construction works can start in 2022, which will take about one year to be completed. “We are pleased to present a sustainable mobility solution for the BUGA 23 and present this urban transportation solution to the public,“ says Günter Troy, deputy project manager at Doppelmayr.
