Germany: Spreepark Berlin Becomes Recreational Park – Re-Construction Measures Started

20 years after the official closure of Spreepark Berlin (1991-2001), re-construction measures are now underway on the grounds of the former theme park. The new concept is clear: giving new life to the historic leisure ground, which was home to the Kulturpark Berlin from 1969 to 1991, in order to create a new local recreation area for Berlin citizens and tourists.

During the re-development phase, some of the old attractions will be audited and restored, such as the landmark attraction: the 31 year old and 45 metre-high Ferris Wheel. The dismantling of the 220 ton-heavy family attraction, of which the complete restruction will cost approx. four million euros, has begun earlier this month. Furthermore, the former restaurant Eierhäuschen, which is over 100 years old, is supposed to reopen to guests in 2022 and will also provide accommodation facilities for artists as well as event venues. The opening of the central area around the new Ferris Wheel is planned for 2024. By the year of 2026 the complete ground with two entrances is supposed to be completed. The Grün Berlin business group, which also manages the "Tempelhofer Feld" and the "Mauerpark" in Berlin, is responsible for the revitalisation of the park area. (eap)
