Germany: Elephants at Hannover Adventure Zoo Move into New Enhanced Outdoor Enclosure

The elephants of Hannover Adventure Zoo have moved into the expansion of their outdoor enclosure just in time for spring – the development is part of the zoo‘s “Masterplan 2025+“. The eye-catcher of the newly equipped enclosure is an eight-metre-high pagoda that will provide shade for the gentle giants. In addition, there is be a two-metre-deep bathing pool with a capacity of 400 cubic metres of water and a 50-centimetre shallow pool for treading water, as well as a new mud pool, a foot bath with woodchips, rubbing spots and feeding holes – all in all an elephant wellness oasis.

As announced in July 2020, a dome structure will also be added to the “Jungle Palace“ in the future, offering the elephants even more space in the cold months as well. Specifically, the new indoor hall – which will also be accessible to visitors and which was designed by the architectural firm PASD Feldmeier Wrede Architekten BDA –, will provide new stations to keep the elephants occupied, feeding stations, rubbing areas, different floors and bathing pools. Co-inhabitants will be orangutans, gibbons and Hulman langurs. (eap)
