Germany: Zoo am Meer Bremerhaven Presents Concept Study for Possible Future Expansion

Together with the City of Bremerhaven and the Städt. Grundstücksgesellschaft Bremerhaven (a city-owned organization for the brokerage of land, buildings and flats), the Bremerhaven Zoo recently presented a concept study which – with the “Biodom“ – shows a possible expansion of the zoo which opened in 2004 as part of Bremerhaven‘s “Havenwelten“. The Havenwelten area is to be thematically expanded by the Biodom which will focus on biodiversity and species protection – so far, the focuses in the city’s Havenwelten are put on the topics of “Migration“ represented by the German Emigration Museum and “Climate Change“ by the Klimahaus.

The Biodom is planned to become an indoor facility that reflects the ecosystem of the Amazon rainforest and to be home to various animal species. The new area will then be connected to the existing zoo grounds via a bridge. A total of around 48 million euros is estimated for the implementation of the concept, for which funds must now first be raised in order to realise the expansion. (eap)
