Some of the first measures that are part of the comprehensive expansion plan for Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore announced in 2019 (cf. EAP News of 3 Apr 2019) will soon be realized: the second quarter of this year will mark the official start of construction works on two main attractions of the tourism and leisure complex on Singapore’s Sentosa island. Universal Studios Singapore will first see the implementation of the new themed area “Minion Land” with a number of new rides, including the 3D motion simulator attraction “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem” equipped with a state-of-the-art projection system (another new theme zone is to follow with “Super Nintendo World”).

Likewise, the existing S.E.A. Aquarium will be extensively expanded. After completion of the construction work, which is expected to increase the visitor aquarium by three times its current groundspace, even more in-depth content and technology-based learning opportunities will immerse visitors in the fascinating world of marine ecosystems, the largely unexplored deep sea and Singapore’s coastal habitats. Likewise, a new, carbon-neutral research and education center is being built to feature learning labs, co-working spaces, seminar rooms and a rooftop event area. Work on the S.E.A. Aquarium, which will then bear the name of Singapore Oceanarium (SGO) in the future, is scheduled to start in the second half of 2022.

Refurbishment of the three hotels Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Hotel Michael and Festive Hotel, which together offer more than 1,200 rooms, is also scheduled to start as early as the coming Q2. The renovation work is scheduled to continue until 2023, after which the Festive Hotel will also have a completely new character as a “Bleisure” (Business-Leisure) and “Workation” (Work-Vacation) hotel with corresponding facilities and offers.

A key focus of all planned expansion measures for “Resorts World Sentosa 2.0” is sustainability and environmental protection. In 2030, the leisure and tourism resort, which is part of Genting Group’s leisure destination portfolio, aims to achieve complete CO2 neutrality. “[…] RWS’s vision for the next decade is to become a sustainable and innovative top tourism destination in line with the Singapore Green Plan. As we begin construction works on our expansion, we continue to pursue a holistic approach to destination building. We are acutely aware of the need to embody into our designs a more sustainable environment, and are engaging various stakeholders and consultants to incorporate the latest technology and research into our developments to achieve this goal.
