Germany: New Edutainment Offer: Interactive Scavenger Hunt with Escape Room in Saxony’s Castles

Burg Mildenstein

Since the end of July, there has been a new highlight for families with children at Saxony’s Mildenstein (Leisnig) and Kriebstein (municipality of Kriebstein) castles. In search of the “treasure of the one-eyed man”, guests at Mildenstein Castle can take part in an interactive treasure hunt on the castle grounds in groups of two to eight people aged twelve and over, equipped with a tablet. The experience lasts just under two hours and ends with a 15-minute escape room adventure in which participants must solve all the puzzles to finally find the treasure. “A great experience for families and the first Escape Room at an authentic location in a historic castle!” says Dr Christian Striefler, Managing Director of Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen & Gärten GmbH.

At Kriebstein Castle, a 14th-century knight’s castle, the interactive scavenger hunt is all about catching the clock thief. In groups of two to four people, the journey leads through the medieval building, with analog and digital puzzles to be solved in about 60 to 90 minutes. Castle director Susanne Tiesler says, “I’m very excited to see how this new playful way of teaching is received by our audience and hope that this will also enable us to make the subject of history interesting for new target groups (e.g. teenagers).”

Both castles are the property of the Free State of Saxony and are managed by the State-owned company Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen & Gärten. Both projects were financed thanks to PMO funding (funds from the party and mass organizations of the former GDR). (eap)
