Back in 2021, we reported that the city of Dortmund was investing 31 million euros as part of the “Dortmund Zoo 2023 Future Concept” in the Dortmund Zoo, which is home to around 1,600 animals in 173 species. In recent years, some of the investments have already been implemented such as in the construction of new themed play structures. For this year, the zoo announces expansion work on the new seal facility, which is expected to be ready in late summer 2023. Already in spring, the capybara enclosure is to be completed. In addition, a new home for the red giant kangaroos and brush-tailed rat kangaroos is to be built opposite the deer enclosure. Furthermore, the rainforest house “Rumah hutan” has recently reopened, giving visitors their first opportunity to view the young orangutan Kleo, which was born last July. Besides the novelties, guests will have to say goodbye to the Amazon House this year. It was closed permanently at the end of 2022, as the facility was in need of major renovation and consumed too much energy. Originally, it had been hoped that a new tropical house would already be in place by the time of the closure – now the city wants to invest the funds in the above-mentioned projects and wants to build a new facility at some point in the future.
