Switzerland: Green Light for New “Lewa Savanna” Project at Zoo Zurich

Switzerland’s Zoo Zurich has recently been given the starting signal for the construction of its new “Lewa Savanna” project, which is scheduled to be accomplished by 2020 to accommodate popular African animal species such as giraffes, antelopes and the endangered white rhinoceros, amongst others.

The new area will be the zoo’s largest project in terms of size and footprint until to date and is developed in the scope of the master plan defined back in 1991 – “Lewa Savanna” will be the third key project following “Masoala Rain Forest” (2003) and “Kaeng Krachan Elefant Park” (2014, cf. EAP, 1/15). The savanna project is supported by Northern Kenia’s Lewa Wildlife Conservancy – Zoo Zurich has been supporting this Unesco world heritage site since 1998. The financing of the new animal enclosure will be completely provided through donations, fundraising will start in November this year. (eap)
