China: Construction of LEGOLAND Shanghai to Start in 2021

One year ago, Merlin Entertainments (Merlin) had announced the signing of a framework agreement for the development of LEGOLAND® Shanghai (cf. EAP news of 6 Nov 2019). Now, the British operating group entered into a formal cooperation agreement with the Shanghai Jinshan District Government, the media and entertainment conglomerate CMC Inc. and investment company KIRKBI, which owns 75 percent of the LEGO® Group. Under the terms of the agreement, all parties will form a joint venture company and contribute funding to the construction and development of LEGOLAND Shanghai. Construction work is set to start in 2021 and is planned to be completed in 2024.

Ruigang Li, Chairman and CEO of CMC Inc., said: “LEGO and LEGOLAND have an enormous fan base around the world. The town of Fengjing in Jinshan District is an excellent option of an advantageous location at the center of Yangtze River Delta with remarkable economic growth momentum and purchasing power.
