Germany: Berlin Zoo Opens “Reich der Jäger“ Area

After the predator house, which opened in the 1970s, no longer suited current standards and the demands of animal welfare at Berlin Zoo, the decision was made to completely renovate the facility in 2018 and so, after four years of work, the new “Reich der Jäger“ (Eng.: Realm of Pedators) was opened on Friday at the same location, where now predatory cats such as lions, tigers and leopards have found a new home. Narrow cages and thick bars were changend into spacious and naturalistic enclosures, equipped with natural ground materials, climbing trees and bathing ponds. A total of around 14 million euros was invested in the new area, which consists of a 4,200-square-metre house and a 3,700-square-metre outdoor area.

“The old house was no longer up-to-date – there is no doubt about that. It is also clear that our tasks as a zoological institution have evolved over the years. Today, we inspire, inform and raise awareness with our ambassador animals. In addition, we are committed to the species in their natural habitat,“ says Dr. Andreas Knieriem, director of Berlin Zoo. Through a four-centimetre-thick glass wall, visitors have the option to get especially close to the large velvet paws. “Humans are now guests in the world of animals. Our visitors can expect impressive animal encounters at eye level here [...],“ adds Knieriem.

In addition to the animal encounters, zoo guests have the opportunity to experience an extensive exhibition with interactive exhibits and edutainment stations and learn more about the big cats. Furthermore, the “Nachttierhaus“ (Eng.: Nocturnal Animal House) is also open to visitors again. (eap)
