Switzerland: Zoo Zurich Reports Results of Fiscal Year 2019
Zoo Zurich, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2019under the slogan “Who knows animals will protect them“, reports 1.254 million visitors for last year, a decline of 4.6 percent compared to fiscal year 2018. Despite the decline in guest numbers, the zoological facility looks back on a successfull year in the sign of conservation. For its conservation project on the Masoala peninsula (Madagaskar) the Zoo Zurich was awarded with the “WAZA Conservation Award“ by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) (cf. EAP news of 14 Nov 2019).
Anually, the zoo honors one person for his or her special commitment for the facility with the “Zoo Oscar“, which is officially presented during the zoo’s general assembly. This year, the former president of the Tiergarten-Gesellschaft TGZ and director of the volunteer team FTW, Claudia Poznik, was awarded in a private circle. Additionally, the zoo could register several animal births and welcomed other new species at its facility last year.
The Zoo Zurich, which is currently closed but hopes to be able to reopen in June, is looking foward to the remainder of the 2020 season and especially to the opening of the zoo‘s new, 5.6 hectares large “Lewa Savanne“ savannah area, which is the new home for white rhinos, giraffes and grevy zebras (cf. EAP news of 10 Oct 2017). (eap)
