Germany: Spreepark Berlin Update – Further Construction and Expansion Measures Announced for 2022

As we reported in our EAP news of 14 Jan 2021 about a year ago, the site of the former Spreepark in Berlin, which was closed more than 20 years ago, is planned to be transformed into a new cultural and recreational park. According to the latest news of the Grün Berlin GmbH, the reconstruction works are progressing despite the Corona pandemic. However, the opening of the Eierhäuschen restaurant, which was actually scheduled for 2022, has been delayed. Instead, the renovation of the Eierhäuschen is now planned to be completed by the end of this year, which means that the restaurant cannot start operations before 2023. In addition, work on the design of the main entrance square, which was started earlier this year, is to be continued. Here, a structure consisting of 60 concrete seating blocks together with a playground, beer garden, restaurant garden and terrace will invite visitors to linger in the future. Also, the construction of a public jetty on the Spree is planned. The infrastructure (path network) of the area is also to be enhanced for better access by bike and on foot.

Parallel to the ongoing construction measures, further plans for the English Village and the Ferris Wheel are being drawn up and are expected to be presented to the public in the summer. A development plan will be required for the further implementation of the construction measures in the Spreepark, which is to be adopted by the Treptow-Köpenick district by the end of the year. For the future operation of the facilities, cooperation and interim uses are also to be examined in 2022. (eap)
