Tokyo Disneyland Reveals Details of New Attractions for 2027
Space Mountain Earthrise, the signature attraction of Tomorrowland, will retain the concept of the previous version, but will be completely redesigned.

(eap) Japan’s Tokyo Disneyland today announced further details of the redesign of its “Tomorrowland” themed area as well as the names of two new attractions. An interactive indoor attraction called “Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue”, unlike anything currently found at any other Disney park, is scheduled to open in spring next year. Meanwhile, work is progressing on the new “Space Mountain” roller coaster, which is also set to open in 2027 under the name “Space Mountain Earthrise”.
Like its predecessor, which opened together with the park in 1983, Space Mountain Earthrise will be an indoor roller coaster. According to operator Oriental Land, the completely rebuilt version will feature a new ride system, a new storyline and new special effects. For the first time on a roller coaster at Tokyo Disneyland, the ride vehicles will also be equipped with onboard audio systems. The experience will begin with a launch designed to propel guests “from Earth into space”.
Architecturally, the new attraction will also differ from its predecessor: The building will feature curved forms inspired both by the movement of celestial bodies and forms found in nature, such as trees and flowers – intended as an expression of the connection between space and nature. The name “Earthrise” refers to the view of Earth from space and to the visual effect of the Earth “rising” from beyond the moon’s surface. With this theming and storyline, the new version of Space Mountain is setting itself apart from the attractions of the same name at other Disney parks.
Sugar Crush: Sweet Rescue will also mark the first attraction at a Disney park themed around the 2012 Disney film “Wreck-It Ralph”. According to the storyline, guests will join the characters “Ralph” and “Vanellope” on an interactive adventure to save the candy-filled world from destruction by so-called “Sugar Bugs”.
Complementing the ride will be the “Pixel Prism” merchandise shop. A new popcorn stand called “Popping Station” is also planned. The “Tomorrowland Plaza” at the centre of the themed area will likewise be redesigned and will also become home to the “Element Express” restaurant. ■
