Spain: PortAventura Reveals Secret about New 2023 Attraction

Visitors to the family theme park resort PortAventura World located not far from the Catalan city of Tarragona can look forward to a special roller coaster novelty, on which the park announced concrete details today: In the summer of 2023, the world’s first dark ride roller coaster based on the action movie production “Uncharted” (by Sony Pictures) is scheduled to open in the “Far West” themed area and invite visitors to an exciting, immersive adventure alongside “Nathan Drake”, the treasure hunter known from the video game series of the same name.

Produced as an alternative prequel to the video game series, the action film celebrated its world premiere on February 7 of this year in Barcelona – one of the main roles is embodied by well-known Spanish actor Antonio Banderas. So it’s no surprise that PortAventura is taking up on the success of this IP for the theming of its new attraction. “We are excited about the announcement of this strategic agreement with a reference company in the entertainment industry like Sony Pictures. This alliance will allow us to be present at a global scale launching our first dark ride roller coaster and perfectly complement our offering. We are convinced that this new attraction with state-of-the-art technology will be instrumental in creating great moments and memories for families and friends that come to spend their holidays and free time in our resort,” comments David García, EVP and Managing Director of PortAventura World.

The dark ride roller coaster, which is being implemented by Intamin and Sally Dark Rides, is to comprise a 700-meter-long and up to twelve-meter-high track in a 4,800-square-meter enveloping space with a height of 16 meters. Likewise, there is to be an elaborately staged preshow with numerous surprise moments.

“The team at PortAventura World has designed a thrilling ride so that fans of the game and film can now step into Nate and Sully’s shoes and go on their own white-knuckle, treasure-hunting race,” says Jeffrey Godsick, EVP of Global Partnerships and Brand Management & Head of Location-based Entertainment at Sony Pictures. Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions, adds, “Following the huge success of the Uncharted movie, we’re excited to see this entertainment franchise further expand into new and exciting spaces.” Over 25 million euros will be invested in the new attraction.
