(eap) Modernization work has begun on the “Underground” indoor wooden coaster at Adventureland Resort in Altoona, Iowa. The iconic coaster, built in 1996, is a mixture of a wooden roller coaster and a dark ride – it is titled as the only indoor wooden coaster in the world, according to the park. The ride built by Custom Coasters International is currently undergoing upgrades with expanded theming, new technology and effects, in addition to receiving upgrades to the track as well as the train. The coaster train has been sent to Hatfield, Pennsylvania to Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters where it will be rebuilt. It is scheduled to reopen next year in time for the US park’s 50th anniversary.

“This enhancement of Underground represents a major milestone for Adventureland, as we honour our past while embracing the future”, said Mike Lusky, Adventureland General Manager. “We can’t wait for our guests to embark on this new adventure as we celebrate the park’s 50th birthday in 2024.” ■
