(eap) After the last elephants left Tierpark Berlin six years ago and were relocated to other zoos (see EAP 6/2020, p. 81), five of the gray giants will return to the capital’s zoo next year. The elephant cow “Pori”, her daughter “Tana”, and her three grandchildren “Tamika”, “Elani”, and “Simon” will be able to discover their new, spacious home in early summer 2026, which, once completed, will be one of the largest (with space for up to 21 animals) and most modern elephant houses in Europe. As one of the zoo’s most significant investments since 1989, the historic elephant house has been extensively renovated and modernized in recent years so that it can be used almost exclusively for African elephants in the future. During the renovation, great importance was attached to state-of-the-art technology and the highest safety standards so that the elephants can be cared for according to the “protected contact” principle (respectful and safe interaction between humans and animals based on the animals’ willingness to participate). In addition, there are spacious outdoor enclosures that mimic their natural habitat, where the animals can feel at home.

“Elephants have been an integral part of Tierpark Berlin since it opened in 1955. Five years ago, the gentle giants left the zoo and have been sorely missed by zoo lovers ever since,” said Zoo and Animal Park Director Dr. Andreas Knieriem. “The return of the elephants is a moment we have all been eagerly awaiting. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the weighty new arrivals back next year. We are well prepared: Europe’s largest and most modern elephant house awaits them.”

While the elephants will be able to claim their new home in early summer, it will take a few more months before the remaining work inside the elephant house is completed and the other residents can move in. ■
