Chengdu/Sichuan: World’s Largest Building Opens in China

According to the media, the ‘largest freestanding building in the world’ was opened in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province in southwestern China, at the end of June.

The New Century Global Center measures ‘only’ 100 meters in height but is 500 meters long and 400 meters wide. 400,000 square meters of the 1.7-million square meter complex are only dedicated to shopping malls and shops. A waterpark, an ice rink, a cinema with 14 theaters as well as two five-star hotels are also part of the building. Featuring several attractions such as AquaLoop, Family Raft Ride, AquaPlay RainFortress, FlowRider Double and a ropes course (from PrimePlay), the attractions at the building’s Paradise Island Waterpark have been delivered by WhiteWater West. The New Century Global Center is located next to an artificial lake in an entirely new planned area of Chengdu called Tainfu New District. Opposite, the New Century City Art Centre, planned by the famous architect Zaha Hadid, is currently under construction. (eap)
