(eap) As one of the highlight attractions at the new HI SPACE indoor amusement park in Chongqing, China – located within the 489,000-square-metre Hi Chongqing shopping mall complex – an interactive roller coaster, a Spike racer, featuring the SPIKE® drive technology by Germany’s Maurer Rides is scheduled to open by summer 2026. This marks the first installation of such a ride system in China and, according to the manufacturer, also the world’s first implementation of this ride type in an indoor setting.

The track will extend over 290 metres and wind its way through the 28,000-square-metre indoor park at heights of up to eleven metres, weaving around several of the park’s over 20 attractions. At its turnaround point, for example, the coaster is designed to circle a drop tower. Four individually controlled vehicles are expected to provide a theoretical hourly capacity of around 500 riders. A key feature of the ride is its interactive operation: riders can regulate their speed independently. The motorised vehicles allow for acceleration up to 65 km/h and braking at any point along the track, regardless of its layout. ■
