(eap) The “Stoomtrein” steam locomotive attraction is not only one of the most popular attractions at the Efteling theme park in the Netherlands, it also allows guests to explore the park in comfort over a distance of three and a half kilometres. In future, the steam locomotives are to be gradually electrified in line with Efteling’s sustainability strategy. The first electric steam locomotive will be introduced in the winter months. The aim is to retain the nostalgic appearance and special flair of the coal-powered trains. Special technologies and effects will be used to recreate the experience of travelling in a steam locomotive. The redesign and technical modernization will be carried out by the British family business Alan Keef, which built the fourth and currently ultimate locomotive for Efteling back in 1991.

“We are very much looking forward to bringing our years of experience and passion to this wonderful project at Efteling,” said Patrick Keef, Managing Director of Alan Keef. “It really is a special task where we can bring our experience with the electrification of trains to bear. Of course, we are doing this with the historical value and uniqueness of the steam trains in mind. We ensure that all parts are preserved for the sake of their historical value.” ■
