Fully Automated Robot Produces Potato Chips at Waldpark Hochreiter

(eap) High-tech meets treat: At Waldpark Hochreiter in Styria, Austria, “Chipsi” was recently introduced – according to the developers, the world’s first fully automated potato chips robot. In cooperation with ERNI and Enkerl GmbH, the Pretterhofer family, operators of the park, developed the robot, which is positioned at a fixed location on a mobile trailer and produces fresh spiral-cut chips from regional potatoes directly in front of visitors. The process is accompanied by an animated film sequence providing information on potato cultivation and food production. The Pretterhofer family invested a six-figure sum in the project, supported by the EU’s LEADER program. “Chipsi is a prototype – and we know that many developments still lie ahead. But we want to be pioneers and demonstrate that robotics, experience, and enjoyment go together perfectly,” explained park owner Angelika Pretterhofer. The robotics company ERNI also has a mobile soft ice cream robot in its portfolio.

The privately operated nature and adventure park has been managed in its second generation by Angelika and Erhard Pretterhofer since 2020. According to the operators, several million euros have since been invested in innovative expansions – from a timber logistics-themed playground to gastronomy concepts such as the “Baumhaus” restaurant with regional cuisine. The park, which is aimed primarily at families with children, also features animal enclosures, adventure stations, and recreation areas. ■
