Germany: New Polar Theme World “Polarium“ Now Open for Visitors at Zoo Rostock

From today, visitors to Germany’s Zoo Rostock can explore the new “Polarium” theme world, which after a planning and construction period of over two years has been officially inaugurated yesterday with guests from local economy and politics (cf. EAP News f. March 20th, 2015 & EAP, 5/16).

On the site of the former “Bear Fortress”, guests can now discover around 12,500 square metres dedicated to the Polar Regions, giving a home to polar bears, penguins and marine life. To learn more about the habitats of these animals and their protection, guests can access a new information centre featuring numerous interactive and educational elements.

The total investment for the construction of the zoo’s new theme world amounts to over 14 million Euros, of which the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is subsidising around twelve million Euros. In addition, the zoo has received donations amounting to some 350,000 Euros.
