Hagenbeck Zoo Unveils New Habitat for Lowland Tapirs and Capybaras

(eap) Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Germany, has opened a newly designed habitat for lowland tapirs and capybaras, which the animals have now moved into. The approximately 1,000-square-meter outdoor enclosure, located just a few meters behind the zoo’s main entrance, provides significantly more space and comfort for the animals. Designed to resemble their natural environment, the new habitat includes numerous hiding spots, a 1.8-meter-deep bathing pond, and a heated shelter. The facility is complemented by an indoor area of 110 square meters, which also features a bathing pool.

They will be joined by male tapir Teodor, who arrived this week from Serengeti-Park Hodenhagen and is currently undergoing a period of acclimatization.

Zoo veterinarian Dr. Michael Flügger explains: “Both species originate from the Amazon region and have very similar habitat requirements – a fact we took into account in the design of the new enclosure. Due to their size difference, they don’t interfere with one another, though our keepers do have to ensure that Yamari gets her fair share of food alongside the ever-hungry Ramon.” A public feeding session is held daily for zoo visitors.

With this new facility, Hagenbeck Zoo continues its efforts to modernize and improve its animal habitats, focusing on animal welfare and maintaining its appeal as a major visitor attraction for guests from Hamburg and beyond. ■
