Japan: Yokohama Air Cabin – Cable Car System Offers a New Means of Transport and Sightseeing Attraction around Amusement Park in Yokohama

With the Yokohama Air Cabin, a new cable car system recently went into operation in the Japanese metropolis of Yokohama, which in addition to offering a new means of transport serves as a new sightseeing attraction in the city districts of JR (Japan Railway) Sakuragichō station, Shinko Pier harbour and the Yokohama Cosmo World amusement park. The new cable car from Nippon Cable Co., Ltd., license partner of Doppelmayr, runs between two stations (Sakuragichō and Ungapark) and features a total of 36 “OMEGA IV“ cabins, each with space for up to eight passengers. All gondolas are equipped with lithium-ion battery powered air-conditioner. Up to 2,400 passengers per hour can be transported by the new cable car operated by Senyo Kogyo Co., Ltd.

The cable car as a modern transport infrastructure solution is becoming more and more popular. While animal and theme parks particularly appreciate the combination of means of transport and attraction “in one“, cities and metropolises (especially in the mountainous regions of Asia and South America) are also increasingly investing in the “green“ transport technology. In Europe, a new cableway system is currently being built in the course of preparations for Floriade 2022 (cf. EAP news of 2 Feb 2021). (eap)
