Jena Baeder Present Plans for Modernization of GalaxSea Pool

Bernhard Dengel, Geschäftsführer der Jenaer Bäder, stellt die Pläne für die Sanierung des Freizeibades GalaxSea vor.

(eap) Jena Baeder, the municipal operators of the GalaxSea public pool, have presented details about the planned modernization of its leisure pool. The facility in Jena (Thuringia, Germany) welcomed some 253,000 visitors last year. After around 25 years of operation, however, key technical systems are reaching their limits, making energy-efficient and technical refurbishment necessary to ensure future-proof operation. At the same time, an expansion of the existing amenities is also planned. A total of 24.4 million euros is being invested in the upcoming modernization. Construction is scheduled to begin on June 2 this year; the reopening of the modernized GalaxSea is planned for the end of 2027. During the construction period, the leisure pool will remain closed.

The focus of the refurbishment is on investments in modern energy and building technology, more efficient ventilation and water systems, as well as measures to improve accessibility. The aim is to ensure a high level of operational readiness and safety 365 days a year, to significantly reduce energy consumption, and to keep operating costs stable in the long term.

“The high level of use of GalaxSea shows how firmly our leisure pool is anchored in the everyday lives of many people in Jena and the surrounding region – as a place for leisure fun, learning to swim, recreation, and health. This broad use is precisely what obliges us. With the refurbishment, we are securing operations in the long term and creating the conditions to ensure that GalaxSea will continue to be reliably there for Jena in the future,” explains Bernhard Dengel, Managing Director of Jenaer Bäder.

In addition to the refurbishment, targeted expansions of the offering are planned, with which the leisure pool is to position itself even more strongly in the future as a family and adventure pool. A central element will be a new indoor adventure world for children with wet and dry areas. Plans include, among other things, a weather-independent dry playground, a spray park, and a jump center as a movement and adventure landscape. Separate access points as well as dedicated birthday and party rooms are planned for the dry playground. These new features will be complemented by a diving station with virtual reality goggles for rent, as well as a new outdoor pool with a pool bar.

“We primarily view the refurbishment as a necessary technical measure, but at the same time we are using the opportunity to reposition GalaxSea. Our ambition is to create a leisure pool that ensures a high level of operational readiness and safety from a technical perspective and impresses with offerings that are unique across Thuringia – as a place that remains attractive for all generations,” Dengel adds. ■
