Karls Eiswelt Elstal Delights with Live Ice Carving
(eap) “Karl’s Eiswelt” (Ice World) in Karls Erlebnis-Dorf Elstal (near Berlin) takes place for the seventh time. Since November, 24 artists from eleven countries have been working on creative ice sculptures. This time, the exhibition with over 20 scenarios is all about transformation. The artists involved in the project are taking inspiration from the works of the 6th Ice World “Ice Fairy Tales” and create new sculptures from them. The special thing about it: visitors can look over the artists’ shoulders and even lend a hand themselves for an hour each day.
“Instead of closing the Ice World for a few weeks as usual and reopening it with completely new ice figures, visitors to the Metamorphosis can experience for the first time when the figures are restored and created. This was a great wish of our visitors. Nothing here comes from the computer or 3D printers, real people are behind the designs and finished figures. Everyone can now see this with own eyes,” says Othmar Schiffer-Belz, Artistic Director of Eiswelten Elstal and Rövershagen.
For a total of 365 days, the ice sculptures from the previous exhibition will be dismantled, rebuilt and transformed into new ice sculptures both in Elstal and in the ice world at Karls Erlebnis-Dorf in Rövershagen. Until January 7, visitors to Elstal can watch Japanese artist Shinichi Sawamura create the ice sculptures and take part in live carving from two to three pm. An overview of all the artists contributing can be found on the Karls website. ■
