Natural Swimming Experience at Germany’s Nizzabad

(eap) After more than 15 years without an outdoor swimming facility, residents of Velbert-Langenberg can once again cool off in the open air. The city near Düsseldorf officially opened its new Nizzabad natural outdoor pool in early summer, and the facility has since proved popular with visitors of all ages. The replacement facility was built on the site of the former outdoor wave pool, directly next to the existing Nizzabad indoor pool, and combines modern leisure amenities with environmental responsibility.

At the heart of the facility is a biological water treatment system based on the so-called Neptune filter technology by Polyplan-Kreikenbaum. It operates entirely without chlorine or chemical additives. Instead, microorganisms, plants and natural substrates purify the water in an environmentally friendly manner. “With the natural outdoor pool, we are finally giving the people of Langenberg a modern outdoor swimming facility again while creating a future-oriented leisure offering with a high-quality visitor experience,” explained Tobias Grau, Commercial Managing Director of Stadtwerke Velbert.
The natural outdoor pool comprises a swimming area with three 25-metre lanes and a water depth of up to 1.80 metres, a non-swimmer area approximately 1.35 metres deep, as well as a children’s and shallow-water area. A wide slide and an open tube slide supplied by Klarer Freizeitanlagen provide additional water fun. A spacious sunbathing lawn with a sandy beach and a sun terrace complete the offering. A total of approximately 3.9 million euros net was invested in the new outdoor pool, of which three million euros was provided through a German federal programme. ■
