New Themed Adventure Playground at Schwerin Zoo

New Themed Adventure Playground at Schwerin Zoo

(eap) Yesterday Germany’s Schwerin Zoo opened a new adventure playground. A themed play area in the style of treehouses has been created on the “festival meadow” between the farm and the meerkat enclosure. Five small treehouses and various climbing elements invite children to explore, romp and play imaginatively. Each treehouse represents a profession from everyday life at the zoo – from veterinarian to zoo director, to shop assistant in the zoo store or animal hairdresser.

“We are very happy that we were able to realize this project together with so many dedicated people and with WEMAG. The playground is another highlight and will make visiting the zoo even more attractive for families,” emphasized Zoo Director Dr. Tim Schikora at the opening.

Planning and design of the new playground began this spring, in cooperation with the team of Künstlerische Holzgestaltung Bergmann. Within two months, the playground elements were prepared at the workshop of the manufacturer from Neißeaue, Saxony. The work in the zoo followed immediately. The dismantling of the old playground initially took about a week, and the new play area was then installed within two weeks. Afterwards, the zoo’s own craftsmen team started the groundwork and fall protection measures. Finally, wood chips were added as a soft surface for the play area.

“The planning of the entire construction phase was certainly ambitious, but everything worked out excellently. We are particularly pleased that we were able to complete the playground on schedule before the summer holidays,” Schikora continued.

The playground was made possible through a crowdfunding project, in which 100,000 euros were raised together with the energy and internet company WEMAG and many donors. WEMAG also expressed its enthusiasm for the new zoo playground: “This project was a heartfelt matter for us from the very beginning,” said Caspar Baumgart, Chief Commercial Officer of WEMAG. “The result speaks for itself: a modern, nature-oriented place to play and learn that will delight children and families alike.” ■
