(eap) Since 2003, the Bobová dráha Prosek summer toboggan run has been a popular leisure attraction in the Czech capital of Prague. After more than 20 years of operation, the facility has now undergone extensive modernisation and expansion. A new “Alpine Coaster 2.0” supplied by German manufacturer Wiegand, which also delivered the original ride, has been installed alongside the existing summer toboggan run. The expanded offering also includes a new dining venue serving street food-inspired dishes, viewing platforms and a children’s playground.
An architectural highlight is a structure comprising five ellipsoidal steel elements and viewing platforms that connect the two rides. These were designed by Ondřej Fuchs of NOSCALE architects. Lachman Styl served as the general contractor for the construction work, while Kers carried out the earthworks and finishing works. A total of around CZK 100 million (approx. EUR four million) was invested in the expansion.
The addition of the second ride increases the leisure destination’s capacity to a total of 400 people per hour. With a track length of 650 metres, the new Alpine Coaster is almost as long as the existing 700-metre summer toboggan run. The latter has already been modernised in recent years, with its original wooden structure replaced by a steel structure. On both rides, the sleds can reach speeds of up to 45 km/h, with passengers able to control their speed individually.
A distinctive feature of the new “Alpine Coaster 2.0” is its computer-controlled operating and safety system. Each sled is electronically registered at the start of the ride. Around 2,000 magnets positioned along the track enable the system to precisely monitor the location of each vehicle. If necessary, induction brakes automatically engage to reduce its speed.
“After 22 years of operation, it was necessary to upgrade the facility to meet today’s requirements in terms of capacity, safety and dispatch efficiency. Thanks to the two rides, visitors no longer have to wait long for their turn. I also know that visitors don’t come here just for a ride. They come with their children or friends, enjoy a ride and then spend some time sitting and taking in the views of Prague. That is why we wanted not only to renew the ride, but to create a place where people can spend an entire afternoon, even when they are not riding,” explains Jan Kantor, Managing Director of operating company Bobovka s.r.o. ■
