(eap) As of today, SEA LIFE Scheveningen has reopened following almost a year of extensive modernisation work. Operated by Merlin Entertainments, the aquarium on the Dutch North Sea coast not only boasts a fresh new look but also offers visitors a range of new interactive experiences.
In addition to the façade, the technical infrastructure, visitor facilities and all indoor and outdoor areas have been renewed. Renovating the building in the middle of Scheveningen’s promenade presented both logistical and structural challenges. Before work could begin, the aquarium’s numerous marine animals were relocated to other Sea Life centres and partner institutions.

With its reopening, Sea Life Scheveningen is presenting a range of new attractions: “SEA at Night” takes visitors on a journey from day to night at a coral reef. Using modern technology, the experience demonstrates in an interactive and impressive way how marine animals adapt to the natural rhythm. The “Behind the Scenes Tour” offers interested visitors a glimpse behind the scenes of the aquarium, accompanied by Sea Life’s underwater experts. Participants learn how aquariums are maintained, animals’ welfare every day. A “Virtual Reality Experience” is also available, allowing visitors to dive virtually among sharks, rays and other marine creatures and offering a new perspective on the underwater world. In addition, the educational programme for schools has been completely revised.
“With this modernisation, we have made Sea Life Scheveningen fit for the future. We have invested not only in the building and technology, but also in the way our guests can discover and experience the underwater world. Our aim is to bring people closer to the fascinating world beneath the surface, inspire a sense of wonder and raise awareness of the importance of healthy seas and waterways. After almost a year of renovation work, we are very much looking forward to welcoming our visitors back,” explains Michelle Hoeneveld, General Manager of Sea Life Scheveningen. ■
