USA: Work Resumes on Universal’s “Epic Universe” Mega Theme Park Resort in Orlando

After work on Universal’s emerging mega theme park resort Epic Universe on an over 300-hectare large site in Orlando/FL (cf. EAP news of 2 Aug 2019) was interrupted last July due to a modification of construction plans during the global Covid-19 pandemic, the project is now resuming. The restart will begin immediately, but is expected to take several months before reaching full-speed as Universal restaffs for the project and reassembles its vendor and contractor teams. The original plans called for 2023 as the opening year for Epic Universe, but due to the pandemic-related construction delays, 2024 is now being targeted for the grand opening. The development of the new leisure destination situated not far from the existing Universal theme park facilities in Orlando is already bringing thousands of jobs, and the start of operations is expected to create more than 14,000 permanent jobs.

“The restart of construction of Epic Universe is a terrific moment for our employees and for our theme park business in Florida. It is our single largest investment in the state and represents our enthusiasm for the spectacular park and the economic opportunities it will generate,” comments Brian L. Roberts, Chairman & CEO of Comcast Corporation.

Tom Williams, Chairman & CEO for Universal Parks & Resorts, adds, “We are excited to begin work on Epic Universe again and for what this moment means for our industry, our community, our business and our team members. Our confidence in our collective future is as strong as ever.”

“The resumption of the Epic Universe project couldn’t come at a better time,” says Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings. “Our community has so many talented workers who will benefit from this massive project. I am confident it will deliver a huge economic boost to Orange County.” (eap)
