USA/DOM: Katmandu Punta Cana Takes Shape

This summer, Falcon’s Beyond Global and Meliá Hotels International announced the formation of their joint venture to jointly develop resort facilities (see EAP news of 14 July 2021). These projects include the development of the Katmandu™ Punta Cana theme park in the Dominican Republic, which, it has now been announced, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2022. The conversion to this entertainment destination will be completed in two phases: The first includes the development of the park including the world’s first Suspended Theater®, which will immerse guests in the history of Katmandu, and many other attractions and rides. Phase two will include additional entertainment, restaurant and retail offerings from well-known brands.

“The size and power of the entertainment brands we will be announcing early next year as part of phase 2 are truly amazing,” said Cecil D. Magpuri, CEO of Falcon’s Beyond Global. “This major joint venture between Meliá Hotels International and Falcon’s Beyond in Punta Cana, an exceptional destination where we’ve been working for over 30 years, will become the first world-class theme park and entertainment destination in the Caribbean,” added Gabriel Escarrer, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Meliá.

The approximately 350 million US Dollar (about 309.3 million Euro) development plan also includes the extensive renovation of two existing Meliá facilities of the “Paradisus” brand, to be completed by the end of 2023. “Together with Meliá and the Dominican Republic, we are truly creating a destination like no other – a new dimension of entertainment for Punta Cana. This entertainment destination is designed to complement the beach and resort experiences day and night, providing a new reason for tourists to visit the Dominican Republic and enjoy everything the country has to offer,” said Scott Demerau, Executive Chairman of Falcon’s Beyond Global.
