World’s Longest Urban Cable Car System Planned for Mexico City

Die Cablebús Línea 1 ist seit 2021 in Mexico City im Einsatz.

(eap) The Austrian Doppelmayr Group has been selected to implement the new “Cablebús Línea 5” – one of the most significant mobility projects in Mexico City. With a length of 15.2 kilometers and twelve stations, the system is set to become the longest urban cable car in the world. A total of 7.9 billion Mexican pesos (around 372 million euros) is being invested in the project.

The new Cablebús Línea 5 will connect the districts of Álvaro Obregón, Magdalena Contreras and Benito Juárez and will have a capacity of up to 3,000 passengers per hour. The opening of the cable car is scheduled for 2028.

The cable car project follows Cablebús Lines 1 and 3, which have already been realized by Doppelmayr, as well as the cable car in Uruapan, which is currently under construction in the Mexican state of Michoacán (cf. EAP news). This will create an extensive urban cable car infrastructure in the country, which is expected to comprise a total length of more than 50 kilometers in the future.

In addition to cable cars for public transport, the Doppelmayr Group has already implemented further projects in Mexico, such as the “Cable Liner® Aerotrén” at Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and the “SkyDream Parks Gondola” at the Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta Resort. ■
