“Anna Sophie & The Castle”: New Adventure Hunt at Clausholm Castle
(eap) The Danish Baroque palace Clausholm Castle in East Jutland is nowadays a popular tourism destination, especially during the summer months. Both locals and guests from afar take part in guided tours through the castle’s historic rooms and explore the extensive park surrounding the 17th-century estate. To make a walk through the castle grounds even more engaging, a new interactive adventure hunt has recently been introduced. In this analogue game, children and adults alike can follow in the footsteps of the castle’s former lady and later Danish queen, Anna Sophie Reventlow († 1743).

The adventure hunt is centered around a creative story about the young Anna Sophie still being a countess. Throughout many hidden corners and secret spots in the park, participants encounter fascinating stories and riddles based on her exciting adventures. Among other things, they might meet a thousand-year-old spirit in a tree or find their way through the great gnrome labyrinth. The new adventure consists of seven story segments, each containing various challenges and clues that must be solved to collect points and earn the coveted title of either “Anna Sophie’s Good Friends,” “Best Friends,” or “Very Best Friends.“
“We want to offer something that isn’t based on a screen, but on being immersed in nature. We want parents and children to share stories and experiences with each other and explore the castle park, where the adventure unfolds a spart of reality,“ states Christian Alexander Berner, owner of Clausholm Castle.
The Aarhus-based creative studio AdventureLAB was engaged as the main partner for the development and implementation of the experience. Founder and CEO Klaus Sommer Paulsen describes the concept for this project: “Although ‘Anna Sophie & The Castle‘ can be described as an analogue experience, it‘s actually built upon many of the same principles used in transmedia and games. Such as thinking in a universe of nonlinear narratives and designing games, puzzles, discovery, and play. But here, it all unfolds in a real-world setting as part of the castle‘s forest. The world of Anna Sophie & The Castle aligns with AdventureLAB‘s principles of building themed universes that enrich and expand the existing environment – we don‘t overwrite or overwhelm it. This principle is reflected in the desing of the elements guests encounter here; they almost took as if they‘ve grown out of the forest... but of course, they were built by the forest gnomes,“ explains Paulsen with a wink. The company worked on the project together with other partners such as Helenius Creative, Juleministeriet, AttractionBiz, ArTart and Qvisten.

“Anna Sophie & The Castle is an incredibly important addition to the many great offerings Clausholm Castle already has for guests. I‘m very proud of what the Clausholm Castle team, in close collaboration with AdventureLAB and their talented partners, has prepared for this season,“ concludes Jacob Overgaard, Marketing Manager of the castle and co-responsible for the touristic offerings. ■
