Center Parcs Nordborg Receives Sustainability Certificate
(eap) Center Parcs Nordborg, located on the island of Als on Denmark’s Baltic coast in Southern Jutland and opened this summer (see our report in EAP issue 5/2025, from p. 63), has been awarded the label of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). This makes the Danish holiday resort – the first of the Center Parcs Europe group in Scandinavia – the first holiday park in Europe to obtain the internationally recognized certification.
The DGNB awarded the resort its Gold certification in recognition of its comprehensive sustainability approach. This commitment covers a wide range of measures, including energy supply, rainwater harvesting, biodiversity protection, and socio-economic criteria. Sustainability already played a key role during construction. The developers focused on recyclable materials and efficient resource use. In addition, the project team worked closely with the Danish Society for Nature Conservation to strengthen the surrounding natural environment. As is customary with other resorts of the group, parts of the facility operate without car traffic.
“The DGNB Gold certification for the Nordborg Resort strongly confirms our commitment to sustainable architecture and responsible tourism development. It shows that we create unique holiday experiences while meeting the highest ecological and social standards. We are proud of our team and our partners, who made this achievement possible, and see it as motivation to consistently pursue our sustainability goals,” said Frank Daemen, Managing Director of Center Parcs Germany.
The operator group has embedded the DGNB Gold certification in its overall sustainability strategy. All new resorts must meet the requirements of this and other recognized sustainability standards, including Green Key and ISO 14001. However, the Aqua Mundo water park, which forms part of every Center Parcs resort, does not yet fall within the certification scope.
Designed for year-round tourism, the Danish holiday resort in Nordborg can generate up to 450,000 overnight stays per year. Local companies Linak and Danfoss act as investors, while Center Parcs Europe operates the resort. ■
