England: Universal Theme Park & Resort Granted Planning Permission

(eap) The first European Universal theme park resort, which is to be developed in Bedford, England, has reached another milestone in its current planning phase: today, planning permission was granted for the large-scale project, which was contractually approved in April of this year. The destination is scheduled to open in 2031.

Although further formal steps are still required following the granting of planning permission – including, among other things, the completion of a statutory parliamentary review period – another important hurdle has now been cleared, according to Page Thompson, President of the New Ventures division at Universal Destinations & Experiences. Thompson expressed appreciation for the ongoing dialogue with the authorities and local communities, as well as with the involved stakeholder groups that are actively supporting the project’s progress.

In the coming months, Universal will continue to provide regular updates on the project’s progress. In addition, opportunities for employment and cooperation with companies and suppliers are to be outlined. Around 20,000 jobs will be created during the construction phase, while approximately 8,000 permanent positions are expected to be available following the opening of the theme park resort. In particular, workers from the surrounding region are intended to find employment with Universal. Furthermore, the large-scale project will be accompanied by an expansion of transport infrastructure, including an extension of the Wixam railway station as well as new motorway connections. ■
