Norwegian Cruise Line Announces Expansion Plans for Great Stirrup Cay
(eap) During the official christening of its new cruise ship “Norwegian Aqua” – recently held in Miami, Florida – Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) not only celebrated the latest addition to its fleet but also unveiled ambitious expansion plans for its private island destination, Great Stirrup Cay, in the Bahamas. New amenities and experiences aimed at guests of all ages are set to become available in the fourth quarter of this year.

According to NCL, the current offering on the island will be enhanced with a new spacious and heatable pool, a swim-up bar, a splash zone for children, and a new welcome center with a convenient tram service to explore the island. These additions are intended to elevate the guest experience onshore and seamlessly complement the onboard amenities of the NCL fleet. A newly constructed pier, expected to be completed this year, will allow multiple ships to dock at the same time.
In addition, the island will feature a new “Vibe Beach Club” – an exclusive adults-only retreat with private cabanas and lounge areas. Families can look forward to the new “Horizon Park,” a recreational space with lawn games that has already been introduced on the NCL ships “Bliss” and “Breakaway” (c.f. EAP News from 10 Jan 2025). The concept will also be complemented by tranquil relaxation areas with hammocks.
Through August of this year, the “Norwegian Aqua” will offer seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida, including stops at Great Stirrup Cay. One of the ship’s standout attractions is the “Aqua Slidecoaster” – the first hybrid waterslide of its kind at sea. Developed by German manufacturer wiegand.waterrides, this dual-track slide combines traditional water slide features with a roller coaster-like ride experience, delivering a completely new level of excitement. The ride extends beyond the ship’s edge over three turns, offering panoramic views and a thrilling adventure. ■
