Spain: Palma Aquarium Launches New “Giants of the Ocean“ Dome Attraction

The Palma Aquarium, opened in Palma de Mallorca in 2007 and operated by the Coral World International Group, will launch a new immersive film experience for visitors this coming April, dubbed “Giants of the Ocean”. During a construction period of around one year, a 400-square meter room has been set up inside the aquarium featuring a 6.7 meter high, 15-meter in diameter large dome as a 360 degree projection screen. The new film theater offers room for up to 125 spectators, who will be able to enjoy spectacular film images captured by German film producer Daniel Opitz, initiator of the project, who succeeded in filming humpback whales at close range using modern underwater technology. In addition to the immersive film experience, the visitor aquarium has created an interactive room for educational purposes offering more information about these marine mammals.

“This new project positions us as an innovation leader in European marine parks and represents a unique experience that can otherwise only be experienced in our aquarium on Maui, Hawaii […],” says Antonio González, General Director of Palma Aquarium.

“The use of captivating, realistic and interactive technologies offers the opportunity to raise the awareness for environmental issues and contributes to learning through a very special experience. It is necessary to reconnect with nature and the seabed, and the new technologies will allow us to get closer to these beautiful animals,” explains Daniel Opitz.

With the new 360-degree film experience, Palma Aquarium aims at further consolidating its position as one of Majorca’s leading leisure attractions with more than half a million visitors annually, according to its own statement. A similar facility that supports the regional economy as a driving force is the Nausicaá Aquarium in Boulogne-sur-Mer/France – read more about the visitor attraction at the English Channel in our current EAP issue.
