(eap) The completely renovated Naturbad Georgenschwaige (natural pool) was recently opened in Munich-Schwabing. Stadtwerke München (SWM) is thus adding another chlorine-free pool to its range of outdoor pools, the water treatment of which is completely biological. Similar to the well-known Naturbad Maria Einsiedel natural pool, a separate regeneration area with a gravel and plant filter cleans the pool water – completely without chemicals. The pool and water treatment technology was planned by the Pauly Group and implemented together with Stadtwerke München, Straub Architekten and Ingenieurgesellschaft für Umweltplanung (INFU) as the total contractor.
The renovation was all about sustainability: a large proportion of the existing trees were preserved and the building materials used were mainly wood and locally sourced gravel. A photovoltaic system and a heat pump, which heats the water to a constant 22 °C without CO₂, are used for operation.
The new pool is aimed at a wide audience: a swimmer’s pool with barrier-free access, a gently sloping non-swimmer’s pool with a sandy beach and a children’s pool with water fountains, spray columns and a small slide offer refreshment for all age groups. The offer is complemented by a new wide water slide, play and sunbathing areas as well as modernized infrastructure such as digital entry systems and lockers for hire. SWM has placed particular emphasis on accessibility: the entire site has a stepless design, paths are equipped with a tactile guidance system and the sanitary facilities also meet the requirements of guests and employees with limited mobility.
The water quality is regularly checked by specialist staff. SWM’s own laboratory and the city’s health department also monitor the water quality. With the Georgenschwaige natural pool, Stadtwerke München is sending out a clear signal for resource-conserving and inclusive pool operations – and creating a natural outdoor oasis in the middle of the city.
Dr Gabriele Jahn, SWM Managing Director Human Resources, Real Estate, Pools is delighted: “The Georgenschwaige natural pool really does have something to offer everyone, an oasis of well-being in the middle of the city. As a completely barrier-free natural pool with sustainable operations, it is not only an enrichment for Munich’s pool landscape, but also a pioneering role model for future pool projects.”
“I am very much looking forward to welcoming our bathers to the well-known yet brand new Georgenschwaige natural pool. A big thank you to everyone in the project team who supported the refurbishment from conception to opening. They really did a great job. Now I wish the former and future regular guests and all curious visitors lots of fun and relaxation in their ‘Geo’,” says Nicole Gargitter, Head of SWM Bäder. ■
