“Disney Destiny” Sets Sail on Maiden Voyage from Florida Today
(eap) Today, the Disney Cruise Line’s newest vessel, the “Disney Destiny”, the third ship of the “Wish” class, embarks on its maiden voyage. The ship, constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, was christened this past Monday in its home port of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale (Florida) by U.S. actress and Disney voice talent Susan Egan. A spectacular evening show featuring drones in the sky and projections on the ship’s hull provided an appropriate prelude to the ceremony before the christening itself took place.
In their speeches, Josh d’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, and Joe Shott, President of Disney Signature Experiences, emphasized above all that – with new highlights for guests on board – the latest vessel in the Disney fleet is intended to serve as an ambassador at sea, making the magic of Disney’s more than 100-year history accessible to an even broader global audience.
Aboard the 340-meter ship, guests will be able to immerse themselves in the adventure worlds of heroes and villains from the Disney, Pixar, and Marvel universes. The following highlights await guests on board: a brand-new Broadway-style stage production based on “Hercules”, dining concepts inspired by “The Lion King” and Marvel, “Meet & Play” experiences with well-known Disney characters, a family-friendly water attraction in a “Mickey Mouse” design, distinctive lounges referencing “Cruella de Vil” and “Doctor Strange”, a kids’ club and other creative children’s areas, as well as fireworks at sea.
As the Disney Destiny sets off on its inaugural season today, the large cruise ship will initially sail four- to five-day itineraries from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas and the western Caribbean. Looking ahead, expansion remains a priority for Disney Cruise Line: by 2031, the company aims to grow its fleet to 13 vessels. While another sister ship to the Disney Destiny is expected in 2027, a completely new ship class is planned for launch in 2029. Also in 2029, Disney and Oriental Land Co. Ltd. intend to introduce Disney cruises to the Japanese market. ■
