10 Million Euros for Modernization of Thüringentherme
(eap) Thüringentherme in Mühlhausen, Germany (located between Göttingen and Erfurt) is to undergo comprehensive modernization in the coming years. Planned measures include, among other things, the refurbishment and renewal of the building structure, interior fittings, and the thermal spa’s energy supply. For the project, the City of Mühlhausen has received a funding notice amounting to ten million euros from the Free State of Thuringia. The total costs of the planned redevelopment are estimated at around 22 million euros. Construction work is scheduled to start in early 2027. The reopening of the thermal spa is planned for spring 2029 – during the construction phase, the facility will remain closed.
The funding will be used in particular to redesign the sauna area on the ground and upper floors, renew the slide structure, and expand the toddler area. In addition, the replacement of the glass façade between the restaurant and the swimming hall is planned. Furthermore, the foyer, including the ticketing, access and locker systems, as well as the changing and sanitary areas will be redesigned.
In recent years, Mühlhausen has enjoyed growing tourist popularity, explains Marcus Malsch, State Secretary at the Thuringian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Rural Areas. “With around 250,000 bathing guests annually, the thermal spa makes a significant contribution to this development. As a leisure and year-round facility, it holds a firm place in the city’s tourism offering. With the funding, we aim to support Mühlhausen in making the facility even more attractive in the future – not only for visitors, but also for school sports and clubs,” Malsch said.
Mayor Dr. Johannes Bruns also points to the importance of the facility for the city: “Since 1998, Thüringentherme has enriched our city’s leisure offering – at a historic site where the first Mühlhausen public bath was established as early as 1822. With the support of the Free State, we can now make the thermal spa more attractive. In doing so, we ensure that Thüringentherme will continue to be a place of health, sport, fun, and social interaction for all generations, as well as for learning to swim.” ■
