(eap) The leisure destination planned by Karls in Oxnard, California, has taken an important hurdle: The California Coastal Commission has approved the project at Fisherman’s Wharf in the Channel Islands Harbor. With approval, Karls receives the necessary land use rights to move the project into the next planning phase.

The concept follows the adventure village model established by Karls in Germany and is to include maritime elements that reflect the coastal identity of the harbor. Planned are, among other things, a market hall, restaurants, a café and a bakery, family-oriented entertainment areas as well as leisure facilities that refer to the maritime and agricultural culture of the region.

“This is a pivotal moment for our community and Harbor,” emphasizes Michael Tripp, Ventura County Harbor Department Director. “Three years ago, we launched a public process to solicit proposals for Fisherman’s Wharf. Karls’ proposal stood out for its creativity, family orientation, and commitment to enhancing public access. Since then, we’ve held numerous public outreach meetings and worked closely with interested stakeholders, community groups, and regulatory agencies. The Coastal Commission’s approval is a testament to that collaboration.  I’m very excited to be working at the harbor during this time.”

Karls managing director Robert Dahl also emphasizes the importance of the project: “The unanimous approval of the California Coastal Commission was an incredibly moving moment for us – a milestone we had been working towards for a long time. Now we have the green light for Karls in Oxnard.” Dahl, who says he has “fallen in love” with this location, is delighted to finally be able to get started. “In September, we will be on site with our planning team to discuss the final details and get started as soon as the building permit is granted.” The successful entrepreneur’s goal with his new location in Oxnard, as with all his experience villages in Germany, is “to create a real ‘centre’ for the community, a place where local families can come together, a place that creates good jobs and a place that celebrates the wonderful maritime and agricultural culture of the region.”

The next steps for the project include obtaining building permits from the City of Oxnard as well as preparatory work for construction. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the opening planned for spring 2028. ■
