IAAPA Appoints Michael Shelton as Chief Operating Officer & EVP

Michael Shelton will take over as IAAPA's Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President.

(eap) The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) has announced the appointment of Michael Shelton as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Executive Vice President (EVP), effective June 30, 2025. With this personnel decision, the association aims to further develop its organizational structure to meet the demands of a dynamic, global market.

In his new role, Shelton will continue to report directly to IAAPA President and CEO Jakob Wahl and will oversee Regional Vice Presidents, the Safety & Security leadership, and Global Professional Development.

Shelton brings more than 25 years of experience in the attractions and recreation industry. He has been part of IAAPA’s executive team since 2018 and currently serves as Vice President and Executive Director of IAAPA’s North America office. In this capacity, he is responsible for supporting more than 4,500 member companies and organizing the IAAPA Expo in Orlando, which counts more than 40,000 participants each year. Prior to this role, Shelton served as IAAPA’s Director of Education, Safety, and Membership, where he helped advance global safety initiatives and launched strategic education programs as well as initiatives to drive strong membership growth. Before joining IAAPA, he held several leadership positions within the Hyland Hills Parks and Recreation District in Colorado, including General Manager of Water World – one of the largest water parks in the United States.

Shelton holds a bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Northern Colorado, along with various additional qualifications, including certification as a Food Safety Instructor. He is also actively involved in industry committees, such as the ASTM F24 Committee and the Theme Park Advisory Board of the Rosen College.

IAAPA plans to begin the search for Shelton’s successor at the North America office in the near future. ■
