(eap) Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, Pennsylvania, has announced the passing of its President Emeritus and long-time leader, Richard “Dick” Knoebel. He died at an age of 87. For almost four decades – from 1988 until assuming the role of President Emeritus in 2025 – he guided the family-owned amusement park through a period of significant growth. At the same time, he is said to have preserved the values and traditions that continue to define Knoebels today.

Knoebel was closely connected to the family business from childhood and developed a passion for the amusement park at an early age, dedicating his life to its management and continued development. Under his leadership, Knoebels gained national and international recognition while remaining true to its local roots, free admission concept and commitment to providing a destination for people of all ages. Together with his family and team, Knoebel oversaw the preservation and creation of numerous celebrated rides, including “Phoenix”, “Twister”, “Flying Turns”, “Haunted Mansion” and “Black Diamond”.

He also served the national and international amusement industry for decades, holding leadership positions with Pennsylvania Amusement Parks & Attractions (PAPA) and the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA). In 2014, he was inducted into the “IAAPA Hall of Fame”.

“Dick’s legacy lives on in every laugh, every ride, and every tradition that makes Knoebels feel like home,” the Knoebel family shared in a joint statement. “He loved this park, he loved the guests who made it special, and he loved the team who cared for it each and every day.” His youngest son and current president of Knoebels, Brian Knoebel, added, “At the conclusion of each trip he took around the park, I was handed a To-Do List. With his last breath, he did everything he could to make Knoebels the greatest destination on earth.”

Richard “Dick” Knoebel is survived by his sons, Rick and Brian Knoebel, his four granddaughters and numerous other family members and friends. ■
