(eap) In the aftermath of the major fire that broke out on 12 February 2024 at the construction site of the new Oceana water park in Gothenburg – in which one worker lost his life and which caused extensive property damage – Swedish amusement park Liseberg has filed a lawsuit against its insurance provider Trygg-Hansa, which has declined to provide compensation.

At the time of the fire, the indoor water park was close to completion. Damages include costs for demolition, site clearance, decontamination and reconstruction, amounting to more than one billion Swedish crowns (approx. 92 million euros).

The project was reportedly covered by a comprehensive all-risk insurance policy provided by Trygg-Hansa. Following the incident, Liseberg submitted a claim for reconstruction costs. On 30 June 2025, Trygg-Hansa officially rejected the claim.

“Liseberg took out the project insurance with Trygg-Hansa to get financial protection against this type of risk to the construction project. The insurance was supposed to account for the fact that it is a large and very costly construction with several contractors performing work for Liseberg. That Trygg-Hansa is now trying to avoid responsibility by claiming that Liseberg has not suffered any damage is hard to understand,” states Andreas Andersen, CEO of Liseberg.

According to the insurer, Liseberg is not entitled to compensation, as two of the park’s contractors were allegedly grossly negligent in causing the fire, based on the company’s internal assessment.

“It is not reasonable that Liseberg should be denied insurance compensation because the insurance company considers that parties other than Liseberg have been negligent. We therefore see no other way forward than to file a lawsuit and have Liseberg’s right to insurance compensation tried by the court,” says Andersen.

Liseberg has filed the lawsuit against Trygg-Hansa with the Stockholm District Court. In addition to compensation for the material damage incurred, Gothenburg’s amusement park is also requesting default interest and compensation for its legal expenses. ■
