Masterclass on Professional Scare Concepts

(eap) Leisure and attractions professionals who are new to the broad field of “scare entertainment” or wish to further professionalise their existing scare and thrill offerings will have the opportunity to attend the two-day masterclass “The Scary Seminar” at Sweden’s Liseberg amusement park in late November.

The masterclass, organised by Michael Badelt of Intya Creative in collaboration with creative designer Klaus Sommer Paulsen (AdventureLab) in Gothenburg, aims to teach participants the art of deliberately playing with emotions. “Scare entertainment is a fascinating field that extends far beyond Halloween. Essentially, it is about playing with human emotions in a balanced way. After all, the goal of leisure attractions is to create strong, positive memories – moments filled with fun and joy,” explains Badelt. The idea is to evoke a “rollercoaster of emotions”, where a brief moment of fright is followed by joy, creating a cheerful or entertaining shared experience that remains in people’s memories, both consciously and subconsciously.

Limited to a maximum of 20 participants, the seminar will cover all aspects of conceiving and creating spine-chilling experiences – from the initial idea through design and implementation to operation. Participants will learn how to select the right genre and theme, develop and effectively stage different types of scares, and gain practical insights into the commercial and operational aspects of scare attractions.

Combining theory and practice, the programme will introduce participants to various principles and methods through presentations such as “The Value of Fear” and “Narratives and Mechanics”, which they will then have the opportunity to apply directly during a two-part workshop. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own ideas and projects to develop concrete approaches to their design and implementation during the seminar.

Further information on the programme and registration is available on the seminar website. ■
